|---|---|
| Mode Of Action | A specific serotonin (5HT3) antagonist (Emetogenics like cytotoxic drugs and radiation damage gastrointestinal mucosa. This leads to the release of serotonin from the enterochromaffin cells of the gastrointestinal tract. 5-HT3 receptors are stimulated causing transmission of sensory signals to the vomiting center via vagal afferent fibers to induce vomiting. Granisetron binds to the 5-HT3 receptors hence blocking vomiting mediated by serotonin release). |
| Drug Indication | Reserved for use in patients on cytotoxics who cannot tolerate or whose nausea and vomiting is not controlled by less expensive drugs. |
| Contra-Indications | Hypersensitivity to granisetron and related compounds. |
