Ondansetron More info
Mode Of Action

A specific serotonin (5HT3) antagonist (Emetogenics like cytotoxic drugs and radiation damage gastrointestinal mucosa. This leads to the release of serotonin from the enterochromaffin cells of the gastrointestinal tract. 5-HT3 receptors are stimulated causing transmission of sensory signals to the vomiting center via vagal afferent fibers to induce vomiting. Granisetron binds to the 5-HT3 receptors hence blocking vomiting mediated by serotonin release).

Drug Indication Reserved for use in patients on cytotoxics who cannot tolerate or whose nausea and vomiting is not controlled by less expensive drugs.
Precautions Pregnancy and lactation; severe hepatic impairment; uncontrolled hypertension;
Contra-Indications Hypersensitivity to ondansetron and related compounds.
Side Effects Constipation; diarrhoea; fever; dizziness; drowsiness; sedation; shivers; urinary retention; hypotension; headache; flushing; transient rise in liver enzymes; rarely hypersensitivity reactions; syncope; bradycardia.
