Mode Of Action

opioid receptor agonist

Drug Indication Mild to moderate pain especially of visceral origin; coughing; diarrhoea.
Precautions Asthma; hypotension; hypothyroidism; pregnancy and breast feeding; prostatic hypertrophy; hepatic impairment; renal impairment (as its metabolites tend to accumulate); children under 1year; 6-10% of caucasians are deficient of CYP2D6 hence codeine is not effective in them.
Contra-Indications Acute respiratory depression, risk of paralytic ileus, acute abdomen, acute alcoholic, hypersensitivity to codeine.
Side Effects Hypotension; bradycardia; respiratory depression; muscle rigidity; itching; arrhythmias and itching.
Dosage 30mg 4-6 hourly after meals. Child over 4 years; 0.5-1mg/kg 4-6 hourly
Special Information It is 100-150% more potent than codeine.
