| Mode Of Action | Inhibition of bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). (This is a step in the biosynthesis of nucleic acids and proteins required by many bacteria). |
| Drug Indication | All types of leprosy (of value in dermatitis herpetiform), toxoplasmosis and mycetoma, malarial prophylaxis. |
| Precautions | Cardiac or pulmonary disease; anaemia (treat severe anaemia before starting); susceptibility to haemolysis including G6PD deficiency; avoid in acute porphyria; discontinue if severe lepra reactions occur. |
