| Mode Of Action | Artemisinin derivatives are concentrated in the parasitized erythrocytes and it is believed that iron from ingested haemoglobin of the parasite?s victim reduces ?endoperoxide bridge? releasing a highly reactive free radical iron (IV) oxo species that rips apart the parasitic cells. |

| Precautions | Since no clinical data is available for use of this drug during pregnancy, it should be used with caution in pregnant women if the potential benefits justify the potential risk to the foetus. |

| Side Effects | Practically minimal. Neurotoxicity is a common side effect associated with arte-mesinin compounds in high doses. It manifests as gait disturbances, loss of spinal cord pain responses, incoordination, respi-ratory depression, convulsions and cardio-respiratory arrest. Others S/Es are nausea, dizziness, and depressed GIT activity. |
