| Mode Of Action | Artemisinin derivatives are concentrated in the parasitized erythrocytes and it is believed that iron from ingested haemoglobin of the parasite?s victim reduces ?endoperoxide bridge? releasing a highly reactive free radical iron (IV) oxo species that rips apart the parasitic cells. |

| Dosage | Adult: 300mg as a loading dose in day one then 100mg OD x 4/7 (I.M or orally). Children: 3.2mg/kg on day one and 1.6mg/kg OD x 4/7 (I.M or orally). In severe malaria the initial loading dose may be increased to 500mg and treatment prolonged for 7 days. |
