| Mode Of Action | The proposed mechanism of action of oseltamivir is inhibition of influenza virus neuraminidase with the possibility of alteration of virus particle aggregation and release. It is an ethyl ester prodrug requiring ester hydrolysis for conversion to the active form, oseltamivir carboxylate. |
| Drug Indication | Uncomplicated acute illness due to influenza (A and B) infections in patients 1 year and older who have been symptomatic for no more than 2 days. |
| Precautions | Safety of oseltamivir in cardiac, renal and hepatic disorders has not been fully determined. |
| Contra-Indications | Patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the components of the product. |
| Side Effects | Nausea; vomiting; diarrhoea; otitis media; abdominal pain; asthma; epistaxis; pneumonia; ear disorder; sinusitis; bronchitis; lymphadenopathy; dermatitis. |
| Dosage | Adults and adolescents: 75mg BD x 5/7. Treatment should begin within 2 days of onset of symptoms of influenza. Paediatric patients: Not for patients younger than 1 year. For children of or below15 kg: 30mg BD. 15kg to 23kg: 45mg BD. 23kg to 40 kg: 60mg BD. Above 40 kg: 75mg BD (for 5 days) |
