Tazobactam

Dose Adult

Administered only in combination. Typical dose with piperacillin: Piperacillin/Tazobactam 4.5 g IV every 6–8 hours (contains 500 mg tazobactam).

Dose Paeds

80–100 mg/kg (piperacillin component) every 6–8 hours IV according to indication; dosing based on the combination product.

IndicationsUsed with piperacillin for severe hospital-acquired infections, intra-abdominal infections, pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections and sepsis.
PrecautionsPenicillin allergy, renal impairment, sodium load, prolonged therapy, monitor renal and liver function.
ContraindicationsHypersensitivity to beta-lactam antibiotics or tazobactam-containing products.
Pregnancy/LactationGenerally considered safe when clinically indicated; compatible with breastfeeding.
Adverse reactionDiarrhoea, nausea, rash, thrombocytopenia, elevated liver enzymes, injection-site reactions and anaphylaxis.
PolypharmacyMonitor with anticoagulants, methotrexate, probenecid and nephrotoxic medicines. Follow interaction guidance for piperacillin.
