Mode Of Action

Interference with the first step in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall due to its inactivation of the enzyme enolpyruvyl transferase, thereby irreversibly blocking the condensation of uridine diphosphate-N-acetylglucosamine with p-enol-pyruvate, one of the first steps in bacterial cell wall synthesis. It also reduces adherence of bacteria to uroepithelial cells.

Drug Indication Acute uncomplicated lower UTI, prophylactic use in transurethral procedures.
Precautions Renal impairment, pregnancy and lactation.
Side Effects GI disturbances like nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Dosage Oral dose: 0.5 to 1g every 6 to 8 hours. Higher doses have been given parenterally as the sodium salt, with up to 20g daily having been given I.V in severe infection.
