Dosage;
Acute uncomplicated infection,
50mg every 6 hours with food for 7 days (3 days usually adequate in women);
Child over 3 months, 3mg/kg daily in 4 divided doses.
Severe chronic recurrent infection, 100mg every 6 hours with food for 7 days
(dose reduced or discontinued if severe nausea).
Prophylaxis, 50-100mg at night; child over 3 months, 1mg/kg at night.

| Precautions | Anaemia; diabetes mellitus; elect-rolyte imbalance; vitamin B and folate defic-iency; pulmonary disease; on long-term therapy, monitor liver function and monitor for pulmonary symptoms, especially in the elderly (discontinue if deterioration in lung function); susceptibility to peripheral neuropathy; false positive urinary glucose (if tested for reducing substances); urine may be coloured yellow or brown. Discontinue if paresthesia or haemolysis develops. |

UTI treatment:
FuradantinŽ, MacrodantinŽ: Oral: 50-100 mg/dose every 6 hours; administer for 7 days or at least 3 days after obtaining sterile urine
MacrobidŽ: Oral: 100 mg twice daily for 7 days
UTI prophylaxis (FuradantinŽ, MacrodantinŽ): Oral: 50-100 mg/dose at bedtime

Children >1 month (FuradantinŽ, MacrodantinŽ): Oral: 5-7 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6 hours (maximum: 400 mg/day). Administer for 7 days or at least 3 days after obtaining sterile urine.
Children >12 years (MacrobidŽ): Oral: Refer to adult dosing.
UTI prophylaxis: Children >1 month (FuradantinŽ, MacrodantinŽ): Oral: 1-2 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 12-24 hours (maximum: 100 mg/day)
