Mode Of Action

Inhibits synthesis of bacterial cell wall, causing cell death, hence bactericidal. required.

Drug Indication Respiratory tract infections, otitis media, skin and tissues infections and other infections caused by susceptible micro-organisms.
Precautions Impaired renal function, penicillin cross sensitivity, interference with creatinine assays using picrate method.
Contra-Indications Sensitivity to cephalosporins.
Side Effects GI disturbances, vaginal moniliasis and vaginitis, allergic reactions, increase prothrombin time, super-infections, hepatic dysfunctions, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, erythema multiforme, fever, CNS effects.
Dosage Cefpirome is given by I.V injection over 3 to 5 minutes or infusion over 20 to 30 minutes. The usual dose is the equivalent of 1 or 2g of cefpirome every 12 hours. Not recommended for children under 12 years.
