Gatifloxacin

Dose Adult

400 mg orally or IV once daily. Duration depends on infection (typically 5–14 days).

Dose Paeds

Not routinely recommended in children except under specialist advice.

IndicationsRespiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, bacterial conjunctivitis (ophthalmic preparations) and other susceptible infections.
PrecautionsQT prolongation, dysglycaemia, renal impairment, elderly patients, tendon disorders and seizure history.
ContraindicationsHypersensitivity to quinolones; avoid systemic use in patients with significant glucose regulation disorders.
Pregnancy/LactationAvoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless benefits outweigh risks.
Adverse reactionNausea, diarrhoea, dizziness, headache, QT prolongation, hypo/hyperglycaemia, tendinitis and tendon rupture.
PolypharmacyWarfarin, antidiabetic medicines, QT-prolonging drugs, NSAIDs, iron, zinc and antacids may interact.
