Dose Adult

Moderate to severe infections: 2–4 g IV every 6–8 hours.

Severe Pseudomonas infections: Up to 24 g/day IV in divided doses.

Dose Paeds

150–300 mg/kg/day IV in divided doses every 6–8 hours (maximum according to clinical indication).

Combinations

May be combined with aminoglycosides for severe Gram-negative infections including Pseudomonas. Administer separately to avoid inactivation.

IndicationsSerious infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative organisms including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter species, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, septicaemia, biliary tract infections and hospital-acquired infections.
PrecautionsHistory of penicillin allergy, renal impairment, hepatic dysfunction, sodium load in patients with heart failure, prolonged therapy may result in superinfection.
ContraindicationsKnown hypersensitivity to mezlocillin, penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Pregnancy/LactationGenerally considered low risk during pregnancy when clinically indicated. Compatible with breastfeeding; monitor infant for diarrhoea or candidiasis.
Adverse reactionRash, urticaria, diarrhoea, nausea, injection-site reactions, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, elevated liver enzymes, anaphylaxis and superinfection.
PolypharmacyProbenecid may increase serum concentrations. Monitor with warfarin, methotrexate and nephrotoxic drugs. Do not mix with aminoglycosides in the same IV solution.
