Mode Of Action

Drugs that decrease serum triglycerides and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol and increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL)

Drug Indication Primary hyperlipidaemia type Iia, Iib, III, IV and V; secondary hyperlipidaemia not responsive to other measures.
Precautions Correct hypothyroidism before initiating treatment. LFTs recommended every 3 months for first year (discontinue treatment if significantly raised).
Contra-Indications Gall bladder disease; pancreatitis (unless due to severe hypertriglyceridaemia); photosensitivity to ketoprofen.
Side Effects Gastro-intestinal disturbances, anorexia; less commonly cholestasis, weight gain, dizziness, headache, fatigue, drowsiness, renal impairment, raised serum creatinine (unrelated to renal impairment), erectile dysfunction, myotoxicity (with myasthenia or myalgia)special risk in renal impairment, urticaria, pruritus, photosensitivity reactions; very rarely gallstones, hypoglycaemia, anaemia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, increased platelet count, alopecia, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and toxic epide
