Desferrioxamine

Mode Of Action

Desferrioxamine forms water soluble complexes with metals. These complexes are easily renally excreted.

Drug Indication Antidote in iron (and other heavy metals) poisoning
Contra-Indications Hypersensitivity to desferrioxamine
Side Effects Anaphylactoid reaction; rashes; local irritation; hypotension; renal disoders; ocular toxicity; ototoxicity; bone marrow depression and growth retardation.
Dosage Acute iron overdose: IV infusion 15mg/kg/hr (until iron serum level is less than 60 micromol/L. Chronic iron overload: Usually maintenance dose in thalassaemia: SC infusion, 1-3g daily over 12-16 hrs 4-6 times weekly
