Mode Of Action

Potentiation of the effect of gamma-amino butyrate (GABA). Example: diazepam,

Drug Indication Short term use in anxiety.
Precautions Myasthenia gravis; gradual withdrawal; elderly; hepatic dysfunction; renal dysfunction; anxiety with underlying depression disorders (as one of its side effects is depression); infants; lactation; narrow angle glaucoma; obstetric during labour; diseases of obstruction of airways; psychosis (as one of its side effects is psychosis).
Contra-Indications Hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines; acute narrow angle glaucoma; co-administration with ketoconazole (decreased metabolism) and itraconazole.
Side Effects Sedation; depression; vivid dreams; psychosis; suicidal tendency; hysteria; constipation; diarrhoea; dry mouth; withdrawal reactions; dependence; paradoxical reactions; hepatic dysfunction; blood dyscrasia; menstrual irregularity; syncope; impotency; allergic reactions.
