Citalopram

Dosage : Adult

Depression: Oral: Initial: 20 mg/day, generally with an increase to 40 mg/day;

doses of more than 40 mg are not usually necessary.

Should a dose increase be necessary, it should occur in 20 mg increments at intervals of no less than 1 week.

Maximum dose: 60 mg/day.

Dosing: Pediatric

Children and Adolescents: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (unlabeled use): Oral: 10-40 mg/day

Dosing: Geriatric

Depression: Oral: Initial: 20 mg once daily; increase dose to 40 mg/day in nonresponsive patients

Alzheimer’s dementia-related depression (unlabeled use): Oral: Initial: 5-10 mg/day; may increase at multi-week intervals to maximum of 40 mg/day

Mode Of Action

Citalopram is thought to act by potentiation of serotonergic activity in the central nervous system resulting from its inhibition of CNS neuronal reuptake of serotonin (5-HT).

Drug Indication Major depressive disorders.
Contra-Indications Concomitant use in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI's); hypersensitivity reaction to the drug.
Side Effects Sexual dysfunction (include abnormal ejaculation, decreased libido, impotence, decrease in sexual ability or desire); abnormal accommodation; agitation; loss of memory; apathy; confusion; dyspnoea; fever; polyuria, skin rash or itching, menstrual changes.
