| Mode Of Action | Benzhexol is thought to act by partially blocking central cholinergic receptors, thus helping to balance cholinergic and dopaminergic activity in the basal ganglia. This results in a decrease in salivation and relaxation of the smooth muscles. |
| Drug Indication | Parkinsonism, drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms. |
| Precautions | Elderly, GI or GU obstruction, glaucoma, hepatic impairment, renal impairment, hypertension. |
| Contra-Indications | Tardive dyskinesia, cardiac arrhythmias, myasthenia gravis, urinary retention, history of sensitivity to benzhexol and related compounds. |
| Side Effects | Anti-muscarinic side effects: dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, GI disturbances, nervousness, allergic reactions, drowsiness, psychiatric disorders, increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma. |
