Mode Of Action

interferes with bacterial DNA synthesis by inhibiting topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV.

Drug Indication E.N.T., UTI, RTI, skin and soft tissues, bone, joint, GI, intra-abdominal, pelvic and severe infections, gonorrhoea.
Precautions As for Ciprofloxacin. Concern over phototoxicity associated with sparfloxacin has led to restriction of its use in some countries; patients should be advised to avoid exposure to sunlight during, and for a few days after, sparfloxacin therapy, and to stop the drug immediately if phototoxicity occurs.
Contra-Indications Children under 18 years, pregnancy and lactation, hepatic disorders, hypersensitivity to quinolones.
Side Effects Local irritation at the site of injection, GI disturbances, dizziness, headache, tremor, confusion, convulsions, rashes, blurred vision, psychotic reactions, impaired vision, impaired taste and smell sensation, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, hot flushes, skin rashes, migraine, photosensitivity
Dosage Orally, 100 to 300 mg in 1 or 2 divided doses daily.
Special Information In vivo activity in experimental model of infection against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms was higher than that of ciprofloxacin.
